Hello, I have been assigned to write a monthly report on this blog starting from this July. My name is Yoshiyuki Yonemura. I have just started working at Kai ASO since last month, and mainly belong to the front desk, also working at the dining as temporary staff for a training purpose at the moment.
さて阿蘇という土地に初めて住むことになり、
ご挨拶もかねてこの地の氏神である阿蘇神社に行って参りました。
この神社は全国各地にある阿蘇神社の総本山で、入口のところに
ある楼門は茨城県の鹿島神宮、福岡の筥崎宮と並んで日本三大楼門に
数えられ、国指定の重要文化財でもあります。
これだけでも一見の価値あります。

Whenever I move to a new town or city, I visit the guardian deity of the area, most cases are Shinto shrines. So I visited Aso shrine for a greeting as a new comer to this town. This shrine is the head of approximately 450 Aso shrines throughout Japan. The tower gate is one of Japan’s three tower gates along with Kashima shrine in Ibaragi and Hakozakigu shrine in Fukuoka. Also the shrine is designated as an important cultural asset in June of 2007, which is worth visiting.

手水も阿蘇の湧水です。Water for purification is also from a spring
日本有数の湧水の名所阿蘇地方らしく、いたることころで飲料可能な
湧水泉があります。
地元の人たちも昔から長年飲料水として利用され、今は全部で11の
湧水を特徴のある名前を付けて、水基巡り（みずきめぐり）として観光の
方々に開放しています。

The Aso area is known as one of Japan’s most famous places for springs, there are many drinking fountains that have been using by local people. 11 watering places in the neighboring area of the shrine, each of which has an individual name, are open to visitors as a tour called “Mizuki Meguri” or a tour of water springs.

11ある水基の一つ「金脈の泉」ちなみに銀行の横にあります。One of 11 water places called a financial spring, that is next to a bank.
神社周辺は門前町を形成しており,中心になっているのが神社の
北鳥居から続く仲町通と呼ばれるところです。
ここは黒を基調とした色に統一された古い町並みを再現した
ストリートで、レトロな雰囲気が楽しめます。
また、通りを歩いているだけで聞こえる水の流れの音が心を癒してもくれます。
There is a shrine town and the main street, running from the north approach to the shrine, is called Nakamachi dori. The row of houses along the street is re-creation of old Japanese houses with uniform color of black. You can feel a retrospective atmosphere of old Japan and would be healed by the sound of water flow just walking on the street.

仲町通りの中でひときわ目立つ白い土蔵があります。
これは阿蘇とり宮というお肉屋さんでは創業昭和30年老舗。
明るい店内には馬刺しや新鮮な精肉が揃っています。
さて今回最後にご紹介するのは、このお店の名物馬（ば）ロッケ、
甘辛く味付けされた馬肉が中につまったコロッケです。
テレビでも紹介され大人気に。
There is a distinguished whitewashed storehouse in the Nakamachi street. This is a butcher, Aso torimiya, a long-established store since 1955. You can get fresh meat including horse flesh there.
In the end of the report this time around, I wouldt like to introduce “Barokke” or a horse-flesh croquette. This has been introduced on TV once, that makes it more popular.

味付けされた馬肉がホントにおいしかったです。The sauced horse meat was just excellent.

阿蘇神社にお参りにいった際は是非立ち寄ってみて下さい。
注文を受けてから揚げてくれるので、アツアツのカリカリが味わえます。
I would strongly recommend dropping in after visiting the shrine
